Barga and around

Paesaggio della Garfagnana

Barga, recognized as one of the “100 Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”, is on a hill 400 meters above sea level, strategic and panoramic position, from where it dominates the surrounding valleys. It is the most important town in the Serchio Valley.
The streets are typically medieval, but most of the buildings, including Casa Cordati (historically known as Palazzo Bertacchi), are Renaissance, the result of the fruitful political and commercial cooperation with Florence since the fourteenth century.
The Cathedral is on the highest point of the village, dates back to the XIth century and contains valuable works ranging from Romanesque to Gothic, as the magnificent marble pulpit (XIIIth century) and the large wooden statue of St. Christopher, patron saint of city. But above all, from its location you can admire the valleys around Barga.
The valley of the river Serchio, land of Tuscan border, wedged between the Apennines and the Apuan Alps, perhaps is the only region having in a few kilometers two completely different mountain chains, that characterize the habitat, green and rich in water. True paradise for those who love nature and mountains.
From the hills up to the majestic fascinating Apennine Mountains on one side, the wild and beautiful Apuan Alps on the other, mountain range with alpine characteristics, easily traversable thanks to the two mountain passes, which separates the valley from the nearby Versilia beach.
Paths dear to bikers, cyclists and those who like to travel while enjoying the scenery.
Lucca and Pisa are only a 35/40 minute drive the first, 1 hour drive the second and are also connected by train and bus. The Versilia coast is an hour away, through one of the most poignant and wild landscapes that you may have seen: the Apuan Alps. Florence also can be reached in a bit more than an hour and a half drive.
There are many places to visit near Barga. The most famous is Casa Pascoli, but also small villages all around the valley: Sommocolonia, Fiattone, Palleroso, Perpoli, Tiglio, Cascio, Verni, Trassilico, the Calomini sanctuary.
Barga is also a strategic base for visiting the nearby Garfagnana with short excursions. Two national parks, the Apuan Alps and Orecchiella with the Botanical Garden and the mountain lakes of Vagli and Isola Santa. Many villages with medieval fortifications, including Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Castiglione, Camporgiano, Verrucole.
The area around Barga and Garfagnana is rich in natural and historical places to visit.

Casa Cordati offers, for free, two mountain bikes
